Both major label and independent artists face

similar financial struggles — major label artists due to restrictive deal terms and low revenue share, and independent artists due to limited visibility, scale, and resources.

For major label artists, they have to substitute their royalty income by mentally and physically exhausting tour schedules, merch and brand deals. However, with the rise in 360 label deals, labels are taking a cut of all revenue streams. Artists are taken advantage of due to lack of education around deal terms, manipulation/pressure by the labels and 'promises' of making it big.

I told myself if I ever won a Grammy and I got to stand up here in front of the most powerful people in music I would demand that labels and the industry profiting millions of dollars off of artists would offer a livable wage and healthcare, especially to developing artists.

Independent artists, who have to self-fund their careers, still end up with 10-20% of their revenue as well, due to music production, marketing and promotion, content creation, touring, merchandising and admin/operational fees. Those investments are not guaranteed a strong return due to lack of access to highly effective resources (such as distributors, managers and marketers) that the major labels have.

Musicians struggle with their mental health disproportionately compared to the general public. Money stress and low income are some of the biggest pressures, right alongside things like chaotic and/or unpredictable schedules, fear of failing, performance anxiety, substance use, constant public criticism, and the fact that therapy is expensive and often out of reach.

A report from Record Union found that 73% of independent artists reported experiencing symptoms of mental illness, with anxiety and depression being the most common.
